Presentation Notes

× Tableau Noir: Acrylic Painting on Black Canvas, Sandy Troudt

Participants will be introduced to creating a painting on black-toned canvas, one of the many approaches to painting that Sandy enjoys. When the color ground is allowed to consistently peek through between brush marks, it gives an overall sense of depth, unity and drama, drawing the viewer into the finished work. This is true especially if the subject is rendered with bright and bold colors that make the painting seem alive. Sandy uses black to make other colors look brilliant. "From the first stroke of my brush, this approach provides maximum contrast for values, highlights, shapes edges and vibrant colour." Students may use their own reference material or paint along with Sandy as she demonstrates this technique. Sandy will give each person individual help in completing their work. No experience required.
